I've been watching a lot of Olympic hockey. One thing that really suprises me is that it has been more exciting than the NHL. For example, watching the German team outplay a more talented Slovakian team was really fun to watch. With all of these NHL stars out on the ice, I expected it to be more like the All-Star Game, but thankfully it's not. Currently, I'm watching a stunned Canadian Men's team get shelled (5-1 after two periods is officially a 'shelling') by the Swedish. One little thing that bugs me about Olympic hockey, however, is the game clock--it counts up, not down like in the NHL. It screws me up every time I look at it. Women's hockey, however, is kinda dull. There are two reasons for this:
I'm very disappointed in the IOC. Instead of focusing on what may or may not have gone wrong with the judging system, they knuckled under to public opinion & gave those two Canadian figure skaters gold medals, effectively declaring the competition a tie. I say that unless wrongdoing can be proven in an investigation, the IOC should stick by the judges decision and the Canadians should suck it up & move on. No, I wasn't referring to the skaters, they acted in a mature fashion, I'm talking about all of the armchair quarterbacks in Canada (and America, for that matter) who think they know better. People win & lose all the time, it's the way the world works. This is a competition, and without winners & losers, the whole activity is as pointless as the Ice Capades. Deal with it like an adult & move on, don't cheapen the games by trying to make everyone feel like a "winner". Thursday, February 14, 2002
"....It's been a hard day's night, & I've been working like a dog....it's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log..." Early this morning, the House finally passed the campaign finance reform bill. The Senate majority leader, Tom Daschle of South Dakota, has vowed to bring the House bill directly to the Senate floor for final passage, rather than go to a conference committee to resolve any minor differences. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has vowed to filibuster against any effort to bring the bill directly to the Senate floor, bypassing the usual House-Senate conference. I saw today one Republican (I don't remember who) on FOX news being interviewed about the bill before the House. He said that special interest groups would lose their voice in Congress should this bill be passed, and that the ultimale loser would be the individual American citizen. The way I see it, the only loser in this is the elected official that allows himself/herself to be influenced by this sort of legalized bribe. "....Love......exciting and new......." Ahhhhh, Valentine's Day. A day where one's thoughts are turned to purchasing knick-knacks & baubles for your Significant Other. A day where you prove to them that you really are a romantic, despite the complete bastard/bitch you may be over the other 364 days of the year. A day where corporate America has determined that you consume mass quantities of roses, candy, and/or jewelry, or risk seeming like a complete lout to Those Who Love You. ...and to those single people out there, what is wrong with you? Why haven't you gotten together with someone & spawned another Good Little Consumer? Haven't you been bombarded with enough skewed media to be made to feel inadequate without a spouse? Feh. On the hypocracy scale, Valentine's Day ranks up there with the Christmas season. Why should I be nice to people just because it's getting close to December 25th? Shouldn't I be nice to people year 'round? As for VD, why should I be romantic on this paticular day? If I really loved my Significant Other, shouldn't I show it every day of the year? Why do I need to be compelled by advertising to give expensive trinkets as tokens of my esteem? Which is worth more: a dozen roses & a box of candy one day a year, or just telling someone special to me how much I love them every day? And why is all of the advertising trying to tell me how inadequate I am for not having a SO? I just don't get it..... Wednesday, February 13, 2002
Strike two! The campaign finance reform bill was successfully defended in the House, despite numerous attempts at sabotage by Republicans. Republicans say that the bill restricts free speech."This bill doesn't contain real reform," said Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, the House majority whip. "Instead, this bill strips citizens of their political rights and unconstitutionally attempts to regulate political speech." Since when did they give a damn about that? Isn't it convienient that when their campaign money is at risk, that they drape themselves in the Constitution? Apparently, free speech is only an issue when their chances for re-election are threatened... Sensing which way the political wind was blowing, the White House stated that Dubya would sign any bill passed, even though he doesn't agree with all of the provisions. Tuesday, February 12, 2002
The White House is quietly doing all it can to sabotage the campaign finance legislation before the House this week while protecting President Bush from any political fallout. They're on the ropes & running scared, folks! Maybe--just maybe--the whole Enron debacle & its connection to the White House will actually do some good.... Monday, February 11, 2002
Armed with a rechargable beard trimmer & a dream, I decided to cut my own hair today. Now, I normally have very short hair anyway, but this time....well, have you ever done something that sounded good to do before you tried it, but turned out to be a disaster after you started? I ended up using the #2 guard to pretty much shave my own head. I thank whatever God there is that it will grow out again. Ugh. The gray in my hair blends in with the color of my scalp, making me look like I have bald spots. And another thing: why didn't someone tell me my head was so round??? I guess I'll just have to put this on the list of Life's Little Lessons:

"Who needs a shredder when you have Daddy's presidential library?" Dubya's attitude toward the American people is one of a condescending parent, patting us on the shoulder & telling us not to worry our pretty little heads about anything so complicated as Government. "What seems to be coming out of the administration is the idea that public information is a dangerous thing," said Tom Connors, a council member of the Society of American Archivists. He's dirty, I tell you.....no president since Nixon has done as much to hide public information as has Dubya. If you've ever wanted to have a romantic Valentine's Day dinner with an international romance superstar, well....you'll have to settle on bidding for Fabio on eBay. No, really! "No, I never asked for a shipment of arms, I said I wanted a shitload of farms....'cause let's face it, you can never have too many..." An open letter to Dubya by movie director Michael Moore. VERY interesting commentary on the whole Enron debacle. Bill Clinton may have made questionable investments and fooled around with an intern, but at least he didn't fuck over thousands of people......remember: Dubya ran for office to "restore dignity to the White House". <snort> |
