Congressional Democrats led by Sen. Daschle wanna know what the plan is for the War On Terrorism after Afghanistan. After wrapping themselves in the flag, the response from the White House & Congressional Republicans was predictable. Trent Lott of Mississippi said, "How dare Senator Daschle criticize President Bush while we are fighting our war on terrorism, especially when we have troops in the field. He should not be trying to divide our country while we are united."

Huh? So now even criticizing Dubya is bad? With all of Europe jumpy about the next move, why is is wrong to ask "what now"? Aside from it being the duty of the Executive Branch to keep Congress informed on what is happening, shouldn't the White House actually want to inform everyone, if for no other reason than propaganda? Hell, if I were President, I'd be telling everyone who would listen. "Did I mention that we're bombing Iraq next, Prime Minister Blair? What, you already knew? Well, tell your EU friends!"

The best response came from Ari Fleischer (White House Press Secretary): "Some people may want to run for president some day." Now what does he mean by that? Running for office has nothing to do whatsoever with wanting to know what the hell is going on. Do they really expect the whole country to blindly follow Dubya without asking questions? These are the kinds of antics that really piss me off.

"...Secretary Powell also said that President Bush's description of Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as an 'axis of evil' had been diplomatically useful and 'tended to clear the sinuses of various people around the world.'..."

Ewww.

Trying to reach a new nadir, Dubya pushed today his Social Security stock market investment plan. As if the worst social plan since "Just Say No" wasn't bad enough, now he's trying to bankrupt Socail Security as well. Let's take a look at this: current benefits are paid out by the current contributions of working Americans. What happens if you remove some of the incoming cash? Where does the missing income come from to pay eligible Americans now? "Republicans are pushing for privatization, which would take money out of the program and make the financial problems worse. Privatization would also lead to massive benefit cuts, and rely on nonexistent general revenues to finance private accounts.'' Duh.

I rarely watch the O'Reilly Factor on FOX News because I think O'Reilly is a pompous asshole. Here is a transcript of director Michael Moore duking it out with O'Reilly. The more I hear from Moore, the more I like him... (via Fark)

"Whenever a government talks of taking harder measures, it always means it will increase its own power," says Shahidur Rahman, "I am nervous of what the government can do under the pretext of national security and cracking down on terrorism." He's referring to Pakistan, but he may as well be referring to the US. Could Pakistan be a cautionary tale for Americans? Fewer freedoms do not equal more safety...

I have to admit that I didn't watch the Olympic closing ceremonies. I simply had no desire to do so, especially when I saw who was performing. Looking at the lineup, one thought kept going thru my mind: was Bono too busy that weekend?

In fact, the only Olympic stuff I watched was the men's hockey, some of the women's hockey, and a bit of curling. Curling interested me because it closely resembled the shuffleboard I play in the bars from time to time. Other than those sports, the Olympic coverage was like watching paint dry....

If you've ever read any history of the US Constitution, you know that the constitutional convention was fraught with troubles. Now it seems that the EU is attempting to do the same thing. It's the battle of Federalist factions favoring an integrated Europe vs. 'states rights' factions (led by the UK). Throw in an egomaniacal French chairman and you've got more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
