IS TURNABOUT FAIR PLAY?

Having the day off, I turned to the Daily Probe for my satirical news fix of the week, when I saw this:
City Wins Right to Erect Municipal Government Display on Church Property

MELBA, Okla. (DPI) - Mayor Jefferson Thomas won court approval to erect a municipal government diorama on the property of the First Church of Melba. The display, which features Thomas and City Attorney Abe Bloomberg reading the city budget for fiscal year 2003 to representatives of the police, fire, and sanitation department unions, will be erected on the front lawn of the church and will remain until elections in March. Rev. Luther Calvin opposed the display, arguing that it would create the impression that the church endorsed the city government. "Many parishioners live in neighboring cities or don't believe in city government at all," said Calvin, who blamed the controversy on government fanatics.
This puts an interesting spin on all of the flap over the past year about the government display of the 10 Commandments/"separation of church and state" thing. I wonder how many churches really would consent to having such a display in front of their building?

It makes you think, doesn't it?

...or is it just me?

Happy Holidays to everyone out there. I probably won't be posting until after Christmas, as things begin to move fast & furious here around noon. I hope everyone gets what they wish for.

Y'all don't wanna know what I want for Christmas.

THEY ARE OUT TO GET ME!

To paraphrase Trent Lott in an interview with the Associated Press: "Yeah, I said a stupid thing that clued everyone in to my true feelings, but it wasn't my fault. My enemies are out to get me."

"Lott takes blame for falling into 'trap' " says the headline, which is very deceiving. In actuality, he's not taking the blame for anything, in fact painting himself as the victim.
"When you're from Mississippi and you're a conservative and you're a Christian, there are a lot of people that don't like that. I fell into their trap and so I have only myself to blame."
This is a lot of smoke and mirrors. What he's trying to say is that we shouldn't believe that he was forced out of the leadership because of his bigoted nature, it was really his enemies (a.k.a. Democrats & liberals) baiting him because they hate that he's such a good guy. Being a Christian or being from Mississippi have nothing to do with the remark that came from his mouth. Neither does being a conservative--being a Republican might, seeing as the Republican Party has a track record of being anti-Affirmative Action as well as a history of monochromaticism, amongst other things, but being a conservative does not.

Granted, once someone has been branded a racist, it is very hard in our kneejerk society for a person to prove that they are not, but even Lott's apology seemed, well, racist.
He later apologized, saying "a poor choice of words conveyed to some the impression that I embraced the discarded policies of the past. Nothing could be further from the truth."
"Discarded policies"? Doesn't it seem as if he couldn't quite bring himself to say "racism bad!", as if even mouthing such would be physically painful?

One thing I don't understand is the fact that people seem to be satisfied with the fact that he is no longer Senate Majority Leader. He is still a U.S. Senator! Why aren't the people of Mississippi breaking out the pitchforks & torches for a mob scene outside his front door? Apparently, some in his home state still feel angry.
On Sunday afternoon, a police bomb squad was called to Lott's home in a false alarm after a passer-by left a box on his mailbox.

On the box, in black marker, were the words: "We always knew you were a hypocrite, Trent. Thanks for setting Mississippi back another 50 years."
Yeah, thanks, Trent. You've singlehandedly given Mississippi and the United States a black eye.

Pardon the pun.
