I AM A DEMOCRAT, AND (KINDA) PROUD OF IT!

I'm a card-carrying Democrat. I have been since I was able to vote. For the most part, I've always been proud of that fact. Recently, however, I have to admit to a certain amount of shame attributed to my association with the Democratic Party as is on display in Washington. Here's my beef:
  1. Daschle and his cohorts are wrong about Iraq. I know that they think they're being good Democrats by opposing whatever Dubya proposes, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Don't get me wrong, I believe that war with Iraq is entirely for the self-interest of the United States. We can't have a "loose cannon" armed with NBC weapons affecting our supply of crude oil. A beneficial side effect of any war will be to free an oppressed people (i.e. the people of Iraq) from a dictator, and also to start a climate of democracy & accountability in the non-secular Arab world.
  2. Disorganization ain't sexy. The one thing that that the Republican Party does better than any other is to speak with one voice. Very few nay-sayers ever oppose the party line, and those few that do are generally well regarded by persons of both political parties. Compare & contrast this to the Democratic Party. The Democrats can't even seem to agree on who truly speaks for the party, let alone any kind of cohesive agenda. Current Democratic opposition reminds me of the Monty Python skit "Argument Clinic", where one man thinks that an argument consists of merely taking the opposite position as that of his opponent. Democrats need a strong leader (more like McCain--too bad he's a Republican), and an effective Party Whip. They should be listening to the "word on the street", paying attention to the pundits, and brainstorming on their own to find the Achilles' Heel of the White House--the bungling of the economy. THAT'S the wooden stake they should be driving into the heart of the Administration. Once that's done and the war is over, the stage will be set most favorably for the next election.
  3. Turn the tables on 'em. Throughout the 80's and 90's, the Republican Party proclaimed themselves the party of fiscal responsibility. Suddenly, with the turn of an election, they are espousing the theory of deficit spending--in a BIG way! This is spending of a nature that will cause serious harm to the American people for decades to come, and all for the sake of making Dubya seem decisive right now. The Democrats should look back at the congressional record of the past 20 years and use the Republicans' past arguments against them. After all, the Republicans thought they thought they were in the right back then...
The only Democratic candidate that has even caught my attention with his message has been Gary Hart, and even that was rather tentative. Granted, the campaign season is only just now starting, with all of the potential nominees poking their heads out of their holes, looking for that shadow that will indicate whether they should begin assembling a staff, or whether they should go back to sleep for another four years...

"UM...MAYBE WE DIDN'T THINK THIS COMPLETELY THROUGH..."

Turkish markets plummet after rejection of troop deal with the US.
Stock markets had risen Friday in expectation of a "yes" vote. The money would have helped the $90 billion financial crisis and eased the huge International Monetary Fund payments facing Turkey.

...

Parliament member Inal Batu, an opponent, said the vote expressed the will of the majority of the Turkish people. "The matter is closed," he said, "and parliament will go back to work on routine matters."
Yeah, like how to prop up their economy.
