ONE WEEK ...until I take that big metal bird to the east coast. Washington, D.C., here I come! I'm having trouble deciding if I should actually use a suitcase that I would have to check in, or just cram everything into a carry-on bag. What are the carry-on limits? Any advice from my three readers? UPDATE: Carry-on wins by default. I bought a $30 bag that should do the trick. I wouldn't have, but all of my other so-called "luggage" is over ten years old & falling apart. Four days to go! Wednesday, May 14, 2003
NO WONDER FLUFFY IS LOOKING AT ME FUNNY Via the Daily Probe: PETA Defends Human Medical TestingHeh. YEAH, BUT ARE THERE ANY GOOD RESTAURANTS THERE? The Dante's Inferno Test has banished you to the Sixth Level of Hell - The City of Dis! Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
Take the Dante's Divine Comedy Inferno Test MAYBE THERE'S HOPE YET Just when you thought the entire Republican Party was completely removed from reality, there comes along a glimmer of sense that gives one hope. Iowa Congressman Jim Leach was one of three Republicans to vote against tax cuts. "Wars cannot be paid for with tax cuts," he said. "Legislative budgets, like family budgets, must be subjected to common-sense discipline."I read somewhere that supporting a tax cut was about as politically brave as handing out free cotton candy at the state fair. This is real courage--going against the party line in favor of fiscal responsibility. Monday, May 12, 2003
HOCKEY NOTES The Philadelphia Flyers have had "issues" for a long time now. First it was the Eric Lindros saga, now it's Roman Cechmanek, their goaltender. "I think it'll be very difficult to bring Roman back,'' general manager Bob Clarke said Monday. "I don't think he wants to come back. I think he feels it's not a good place for him.''The Flyers have had goaltending problems ever since Ron Hextall. I'm thinking that the problem is more on the management side. Perhaps a new GM would do the trick? The Detroit Red Wings decided to let Luc Robitaille go into free agency. This isn't a major loss for the Wings, as Luc didn't really factor into the team this season, either in the regular or postseason. The $3 million savings for letting him go could be better spent on signing potential free agents such as Sergei Fedorov and Darren McCarty. In any case, I think this past season showed the Wings that they need to get younger & faster, not older & slower like they have done in the past. Give the young talent the playing time now, teach them to play like winners, allow them to learn from the list of future Hall of Famers, and build for the future as well as win for the present. Well, this is officially the weirdest postseason that I can remember. Who would've thought that the #6 & #7 seeds would be duking it out for the chance to go to the Cup Finals in the West? Who would've imagined that Ottawa would make it past the first round? My predictions: Minnesota over Anaheim in 7Ottawa over Minnesota in 5 to win the Stanley CupYep, you heard it here first. Ottawa has attitide, moxy, size, speed, and talent, as well as stellar goaltending. That team has come a long way in the past five years. They've paid their dues, now it's time to collect. "...WE'RE JUST TRYING TO BE COMPLETELY FAIR..." Workers at a plant in Omaha where Dubya is visiting will be (in essence) penalized for having him there. An Airlite spokesman said in a telephone interview last night that most workers would be given four options when the plant is partly closed for one and a half shifts during the speech: They can take an official day off whether or not they attend the speech and make up the work on Saturday to receive full pay. They can use a paid vacation day. They can work their regular shift in part of the plant that will remain open. Or they can take an unpaid day off. It's the President, for God's sake. Give them a break. All of the negative publicity this is creating for the company--and by association the President--will do them more harm than good. It's not like the workers have a choice as to whether Dubya will visit or not. Be magnanimous & just pay them. ...and I'm sure that anyone that chooses the money over the President will be called "unpatriotic", too. Just wait. WELL, IT WORKED FOR MOSES... According to the World Tribune, Saddam is wandering the desert near his hometown of Tikrit. Most of his aides seem to have abandoned him, and to make matters worse, he's being tracked by U.S. Special Forces. My advice: Saddam, if you see a burning bush, do whatever the hell it tells you to do. |
