SUBSTANTIVE DEBATE?

Cheney says he felt better after cursing at Leahy

Well, I guess that makes it all right then, doesn't it? *snort*
Sources told CNN the encounter Tuesday was brought on by Leahy's recent criticism of the vice president over Halliburton Co. Cheney is the former chief executive officer of the oil field services company, and Democrats have suggested he has helped win lucrative contracts for his former firm while serving in the Bush administration.

"It was partly that, it was partly also ... it had to do with -- he is the kind of individual who will make those kinds of charges and then come act as though he's your best friend, and I expressed in no uncertain terms my views of his conduct and walked away," Cheney said.

"Part of the problem here is that instead of having a substantive debate over important substantive policy issues, he had challenged my integrity, and I didn't like that. But most of all I didn't like the fact that after he'd done so, then he wanted to act like everything was peaches and cream."
"Hello, kettle? This is the pot. You're black."

Which will come first for Cheney: heart attack or election loss?

THERE'S ALWAYS FREE CHEDDAR IN THE MOUSETRAP, BABY

See the video for Tom Waits' "God's Away on Business". Twisted.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN

An oldie but a goodie: faux blog entries in the style of famous authors. I missed the Neil Gaiman one last time I visited, but they look like Photoshopped panels from Sandman. The Dr. Seuss is still my fave.

MORE BOOKY GOODNESS

David Gerrold will be putting out more of his War Against the Chtorr series, with book five due out this year (A Method For Madness), quickly to be followed by book six (A Time For Treason). The series will end with book seven (A Case For Courage).

The War Against the Chtorr deals with an alien species terraforming the Earth to suit their needs, and how the remaining humans deal with it. Fascinating, but then I always was a sucker for a good end-of-the-world story...

Gerrold is the guy that wrote "The Trouble with Tribbles" episode for the original "Star Trek". It was his first sale in Hollywood. One of his later books has become one of my favoites (When Harlie Was One), about the first AI and the problems with actually proving that it is sentient. Fun stuff, check it out.
